'TENDER NODE
'Tender Node is a proposal for a Brixton Pound bank inserted into and above the existing Iceland building beside Brixton Station. Positioned before Electric Avenue, the project intercepts the daily movement of people using architecture to revive the Brixton Pound and strengthen local exchange. The concept is rooted in keeping value within Brixton by transforming financial infrastructure into a visible public experience. Instead of replacing the existing economy, the intervention exposes and redirects it through two large voids carved through Iceland and the housing above. These voids were positioned through site analysis, circulation studies, environmental research, and key views across Brixton. At ground level, the project introduces a public plaza inspired by the Ancient Greek agora, creating space for gathering, discussion, trading, and informal exchange. Responding to Brixton’s lack of communal public space, the plaza supports local vendors while a stepped landscape guides visitors into an auditorium supported by seaweed-inspired structural columns rising through Iceland to carry the new bank masses above. Inside Iceland, the design approach is informed by shopping cart circulation and customer movement studies, allowing the intervention to integrate subtly into the existing supermarket while also creating office and security spaces for Iceland itself. Above, the auditorium operates as a meeting and seminar venue focused on the Brixton Pound and local identity. Two architectural masses contain the public bank and private currency production spaces. Between them, a stock exchange trading floor displays the performance of the Brixton Pound alongside global currencies. A gold façade fluctuates in value with the price of gold, with affected residents gaining partial ownership, transforming the architecture into a shared economic asset. Tender Node proposes a new financial infrastructure rooted in community, visibility, and local participation. An architecture where value remains within Brixton, creating money that sticks to Brixton.
